Low or choppy FPS? These 10 tips work on both 1.8.9 and 1.21, from in-game settings to your graphics card. Most take less than a minute.

The quick version

Lower your render distance, use Fast graphics, turn VSync off and make sure you're on your dedicated graphics card. Those four alone fix most low-FPS problems.

  1. Start with Velora's defaults

Velora turns on performance settings from the first launch, so you start from a fast setup instead of vanilla.

  2. Lower your render distance

Render distance has the biggest impact on FPS. For PvP, 6 to 10 chunks is plenty. On 1.21, also lower Simulation Distance.

  3. Use Fast graphics

Set Graphics to Fast, turn Clouds off and set Particles to Minimal. Turning off Entity Shadows helps too.

  4. Turn off Smooth Lighting

Smooth Lighting looks nice but costs frames. Set it to Off or Minimum. On 1.21, set Biome Blend to Off as well.

  5. Uncap your frame rate

Set Max Framerate to Unlimited (or your monitor's refresh rate) and turn VSync off for the lowest input delay.

  6. Play in (borderless) fullscreen

Windowed mode is often slower. Use fullscreen or Velora's Borderless Fullscreen mod.

  7. Use your graphics card

On laptops, plug in your charger and make sure Minecraft runs on your dedicated GPU. On Windows: Settings → System → Display → Graphics, and set Java to High performance.

  8. Don't over-allocate RAM

More RAM isn't always faster. Around 2–4 GB is usually enough for 1.8.9 and 4–6 GB for 1.21. Too much can cause stutters.

  9. Use 16x resource packs

High-resolution packs (64x and up) can cut your FPS a lot. Most PvP packs are 16x for a reason.

  10. Close what you don't need

Browsers, recording software and other launchers in the background all take CPU and GPU time. Also keep your graphics drivers up to date.
